If you have been thinking that you are ready to achieve a smoother, rejuvenated appearance with Botox, you might be wondering what your first Botox treatment will be like. To help you prepare, it’s important to understand the process.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know before your first Botox treatment!

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It can be used in cosmetic procedures to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing or weakening the muscles responsible for creating them.

Botox has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use for over twenty years. It has proven to be an extremely safe and effective way to address aspects of your appearance that you are less-than-happy with and would like to change.

What Can Botox Treat?

While originally developed to treat just the muscles of the face, Botox is now used to treat an array of appearance concerns. These concerns include:

  • Frown lines on the forehead
  • Sagging eyebrows
  • Furrow lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Puffiness and wrinkles on the lower eyelid
  • Sagging skin under the chin and on the neck
  • Tension and discomfort along the jawline caused by clenching of the teeth
  • Correction of a downward frown

There are also certain medical conditions that can be effectively treated with Botox. One such eye condition is blepharospasm, which can cause involuntary closing of the eyelids, uncontrolled blinking of the eye, or twitching of facial muscles.

Botox can also help treat migraine headaches and TMJ, or Temporo-Mandibular Joint disorders. Increasingly, younger adults are opting for Botox as a preventative treatment.

They have found that using small doses of Botox to treat areas prone to develop fine lines and wrinkles can prevent them from ever forming.

Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?

There are a number of factors that can determine whether you are a good candidate for Botox. You are likely a good candidate for Botox if you:

  • Are at least eighteen years of age
  • Are in good physical health
  • Are not currently pregnant or nursing
  • Have mild-to moderate dynamic wrinkles
  • Are interested in a non-surgical treatment option
  • Have realistic expectations about treatment outcomes

How Do I Prepare for Botox Treatment?

When you opt for Botox treatment at Advanced Aesthetics & MedSpa, the first step is a complimentary consultation with one of our Advanced Injectors. At this consultation, we will discuss your appearance goals and give you an individual assessment of what Botox can do for you.

Depending on your personal preferences, Botox treatment can be given the same day as the consultation or scheduled for a later date. The total time for the consultation is approximately thirty minutes.

Ahead of your scheduled Botox treatment, it is advisable to stay away from alcohol as well as aspirin or other blood thinners, as these can increase the likelihood of bruising. You should not exercise right before your appointment and avoid wearing make-up that day.

What is a Botox Treatment Like?

At your appointment for Botox treatment, your Advanced Injector will first review any changes to your medical history or list of medications. They will also answer any questions you may have before the actual treatment.

The Advanced Injector then makes a series of temporary marks on your face to map out treatment. Using these marks, they will then administer a series of Botox injections.

While many people worry that Botox injections will be painful, most patients report only a small pinching sensation with each injection. Treatment is very quick, taking an average of just five to ten minutes to complete.

What is Recovery from Botox Like?

Immediately following treatment, you will likely have some redness and swelling around the injection sites. This usually goes away on its own within a few hours.

For optimal results, we advise that you do not lie down for three to four hours following treatment and that you avoid any strenuous activity for twenty-four hours. You should take care not to rub or put pressure on the injection sites for at least twenty-four hours.

When Will I See the Results of Botox?

Most people will start to see the results from Botox within four days after treatment. The full effects of treatment are typically realized within two to three weeks.

How Long Does Botox Last?

While individual results can vary, for most people the effects of Botox last anywhere from between three to six months. It is important to remember that Botox is not a permanent treatment, and you will need to schedule consistent treatment appointments to maintain the results.

Are There Any Side Effects Associated with Botox?

While Botox is highly safe and side effects are rare, some people do experience them. The most common side-effect is irritation or bruising at the injection site.

Less common side-effects include allergic reactions and headache or flu-like symptoms. Botox is the leading choice for individuals who would like to enhance their appearance and minimize the signs of aging. When you choose an experienced provider like Advanced Aesthetics & MedSpa, you are sure to be amazed by the results of your first Botox treatment!
